A maturing hairline is something that all men (and some women) will experience in their life, and the process can begin relatively early. Do many individuals tend to ask what is a mature hairline? and the answer is relatively simple. A maturing hairline is when the hairline begins to move back up the scalp and results in the exposure of more forehead.
Many have associated a maturing hairline with hair loss but that is not entirely true and it may, in fact, be a myth. A maturing hairline is a shift in the hairline, not a loss of it.
Even when you are maturing you can still have a full head of hair, the only downside is that you will have less of a fringe. Nonetheless, maturing hairlines lead to many men panicking about their appearance and can lead to men becoming self-conscious about their hair. The maturing process usually starts at a young age when puberty finishes and it is noticeable as the temples will begin to move up the forehead. As previously mentioned, however, maturing hairline is not balding! Just because the hair is moving up the temples does not mean that you will get a widow’s peak.
There are a number of different categories of the maturing hairline and some are more distinct than others. In the hair loss industry, a maturing hairline is considered on the Norwood scale and is considered a class two receding pattern.
More often than not, a maturing hairline is shaped like a V and individuals vary in the distance their temples will move back.
Saying that it is would be incorrect to assume that a maturing hairline will never result in hair loss, as hair loss may come about at an older age. You can distinguish between male pattern baldness and a mature hairline through the distance at which the hair recedes. Usually, a faster-receding hairline is linked to baldness and if the temples recede significantly faster this could also be a sign. There are a number of causes for a maturing hairline and in most cases, they are linked to genetics and hormones.
What causes a mature hairline?
As well as know what is a mature hairline, it can be helpful to understand the causes of a mature hairline and how it can result. In most cases, unfortunately, a maturing hairline is the result of genetic code which is impossible to change. No one wants to have a maturing hairline but it is something that you need to notice fast and take action upon. Usually, many men and women will be in denial about their hairline claiming that nothing has changed. However, staying in denial can lead to worse effects and early acting can help significantly.
The main cause of a maturing hairline is genetics and more specifically, the hormone known as dihydrotestosterone.
This hormone is produced when the testosterone mixes with 5 Alpha Reductase, which is an enzyme, and it is one of the primary causes of hairline receding and as well as mature.
This is because this hormone attacks the hair follicles and results in the thinning and falling out. The hormone achieves this through preventing the blood to freely circulate around the scalp, preventing the correct nutrients from reaching the hair follicles to promote healthy growth. This process is fairly rapid and men do not notice that approximately 50% of their hair has fallen out already. One of the more popular beliefs of a maturing hairline is that is it the result of a lack of blood flow, clogged pores and a lack of oxygen to the hair follicles.
These facts are not true and in most cases, maturing hairlines are the result of an oversensitivity towards the hormone dihydrotestosterone.
An excellent way to check whether your hair is maturing is to pluck a hair and compare its thickness to other patches of hair further up the head. If the plucked hair is thinner than the other hair, then you may be thinning and maturing, thus requiring the consultancy of a dermatologist.
As previously mentioned, it is important to act on maturing quickly and to stop being in denial about it.
How long does it take for a hairline to mature?
About 2 out of 3 men will experience some sort of hair loss and almost all men will experience a maturing hairline. When asking a question usually the time at which it begins is always missed out and it can be beneficial to know when the process starts and how long it takes for your hair to fully mature and recede.
Unfortunately, there is no exact stat that gives a number of years, months or days to when a hairline will fully mature. Again, it is all to do with your genetic code and how sensitive you are to dihydrotestosterone. In most individuals, maturing hairlines becomes noticeable around the end of puberty and the hair will begin to recede between the ages of 17 and 30 and is more prevalent in Caucasian men.
According to a number of studies, hair loss begins around the age of 21, so a maturing hairline at a young age does not indicate you will bald at an older age.
If you feel that your hair is balding and not maturing there are a number of ways you can identify it. A common way to figure out whether you are losing hair is through identifying the shredding of your hair when you sleep and shower. If you are waking up every morning and finding a few hairs littered around your pillow you may be balding and not maturing.
There will also be difficulty in styling hair if you are balding, however, this can also occur with maturing hairlines as well. If your hair has a chewed-out look, you may be balding also.
A maturing hairline is something that no man wants and can be a detrimental thing which can cause anxiety and self-apprehension. A mature hairline is when your hair begins to creep back up your head exposing more skin. It is different to hair loss as you are still able to keep a full head of hair even if your hair recedes quite drastically.
There are a number of causes to mature hairlines but more often than not the main cause it genetics and the hormone dihydrotestosterone.
This attacks the hair follicles and causes them to thin and fall out. A maturing hairline can begin right after puberty and is more common between the ages of 17-30. Hopefully, this article is informative and has helped you understand what hair maturing is.
